Mineré Introduces First-ever Eco-Friendly rPET Bottle in Thailand’s Drinking Water Category with the “BOTTLE MADE FROM BOTTLES” Campaign

Mineré BOTTLE MADE FROM BOTTLES

Mineré natural mineral water by the Water Business Unit of Nestlé (Thai) Ltd. is taking a significant stride in the Thai drinking water market by launching “Mineré Eco-friendly rPET bottle” (Recycled Polyethylene Terephthalate) made from recycled plastic. It has been certified by Thailand’s Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for meeting quality, safety, and cleanliness standards and has also been certified to plastic resin standards by the FDA in the United States. The launch reinforces the “BOTTLE MADE FROM BOTTLES” concept, embracing the recycling process that will endlessly transform used bottles into new bottles to close the loop and prevent plastic waste from reaching landfills, water resources, and the ocean, as well as reducing carbon emissions. This initiative also contributes to Mineré’s goal of transitioning all its packaging to 100% recycled rPET plastic by 2025.

Mineré is excited to collaborate with 7-Eleven and GC YOUTURN for the BOTTLE MADE FROM BOTTLES campaign, inviting the eco-conscious young generation to join in sorting used plastic bottles for recycling into pristine Mineré eco-friendly rPET bottles that are safe, clean, and completely free from impurities. Everyone is welcome to contribute by bringing used plastic bottles to the designated Mineré recycling drop-off point at 50 participating 7-Eleven stores throughout Bangkok from today until 31 August 2023.

Mr. Victor Seah, Chairman and CEO, Nestlé Indochina, said, “This year, we are focusing on our strategy of ‘Good for You’ to deliver the highest-quality food and beverages and ‘Good for the Planet’ to drive positive action for the world. Introducing the Mineré eco-friendly rPET bottle is a significant step in Nestlé Thailand’s sustainability initiatives to ensure our packaging is designed for recycling while reducing the use of virgin plastics by one-third by 2025. These initiatives align with Nestlé’s global ambition as we work together to drive our business operations to achieve Net Zero by 2050.”

Mr. Pinsak Suraswadi, Director General of the Pollution Control Department, The Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment, said, “Plastic waste management poses a significant threat to our environment. To address this issue, the Pollution Control Department has developed an action plan for effective plastic waste management. Our purpose is to ensure that by 2027, all types of plastic bottles are no longer disposed of in landfills and are instead 100% recycled. Therefore, the introduction of Minere's eco-friendly rPET bottle marks a significant milestone for the drinking water manufacturing industry and aligns with the closed-loop principle of packaging. I am pleased to see the private sector's commitment to piloting this practice by bringing more PET bottles back into the recycling process.”

Ms. Naritta Vipulyasekha, Business Executive Officer - Water Business Unit, Nestlé (Thai) Ltd., said, “Mineré is a world-class natural mineral water brand committed to promoting full packaging circularity. We are proud to introduce Mineré mineral water in the first-ever eco-friendly rPET bottle made from recycled plastic in the Thai drinking water market. This initiative is designed to meet the needs of consumers who care for the environment and align with Nestlé's global ambition. The eco-friendly Mineré rPET bottle is suitable for the lifestyle of the new generation, under the ‘BOTTLE MADE FROM BOTTLES’ concept. Made from high-quality recycled plastic resin, the Mineré rPET bottle uses cutting-edge technology for sorting, shredding, and melting plastic into a brand-new bottle that meets international standards for cleanliness and safety as mandated by the Thai FDA using plastic resin certified by the US FDA. Thai consumers can enjoy the benefits of fresh natural mineral water in a new bottle that is clean, free from impurities, and eco-friendly.”

In addition to making all components of Mineré packaging including bottles, caps, and labels designed to be 100% recyclable, this year Mineré is taking a pioneering step in the drinking water market by being the first to introduce rPET eco-friendly bottles to expand its commitment to sustainable packaging. This will contribute to reducing energy use by 80% and greenhouse gas emissions by up to 24% compared to bottles made from virgin plastic. The new rPET eco-friendly bottles will help to eliminate more than 1,200 tons of plastic waste, equivalent to the mass of approximately 7,000 whales. The Nestlé Waters Business Unit in Thailand is also committed to promoting the proper collection of used PET bottles by actively participating in the “Packaging Recovery Organization Thailand Network,” or “PRO-Thailand Network.” This involves engaging stakeholders from the public and private sectors as well as civil society to drive sustainable packaging management.

The Nestlé Waters Business Unit in Thailand has partnered with 7-Eleven and GC YOUTURN, the leading plastic waste management platform, to implement the BOTTLE MADE FROM BOTTLES campaign. This initiative involves installing Mineré recycling drop-off points to collect used plastic bottles from consumers that are then delivered to a recycling plant for cleaning, sorting, shredding, and melting to produce the recycled plastic resin used to make clean and safe Mineré rPET bottles that are free from impurities. Everyone can contribute to improving the world sustainably by bringing your used plastic bottles to a designated Mineré recycling drop-off point at 50 selected 7-Eleven stores in Bangkok from today until 31 August 2023.

Mr. Varit Namwong, Chief Operating Officer – Value Added Products (COV), PTT Global Chemical Public Company Limited (GC), said, “GC has aimed to adopt circular economy principles to create value for products and promote using resources for maximum benefit through YOUTURN, a plastic waste management platform that comprehensively manages used plastic from end-to-end. It supports reusing plastic from households as raw materials that go back into the production cycle. In this project, all collected used plastic bottles will be transformed into plastic resin at the ENVICCO recycling plant, ready to become a BOTTLE MADE FROM BOTTLES. All raw materials are 100% used plastic produced in Thailand under strict quality control using modern recycling technology that meets European standards as well as safety standards set by Thailand’s Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Thai consumers can be assured of the safety of the eco-friendly bottles used for Mineré.”

Ms. Narisara Bumrungsiri, Deputy General Manager, CP All Public Company Limited, the operator of 7-Eleven, said, “CP All is pleased to partner with Mineré mineral water and GC's YOUTURN platform to actively tackle the issue of plastic waste and minimize the impact on the environment. As part of this initiative, we are supporting the installation of Mineré recycling drop-off points at 50 selected 7-Eleven stores across Bangkok starting in June 2023. They serve as collection points for used plastic bottles, encouraging customers to contribute to environmental conservation by appropriately sorting PET bottles. By revitalizing used bottles and enabling them to undergo the recycling process, we aim to produce new packaging and work towards creating a better world aligned with CP All’s commitment to Giving and Sharing Opportunities.”

A launch event for the Mineré eco-friendly rPET bottle took place on the evening of July 14, featuring Yaya-Urassaya, the presenter for Mineré mineral water, who encouraged the new generation to do good for the planet with a Perfect 10 Score by joining in the BOTTLE MADE FROM BOTTLES campaign. It aims to raise consumer awareness about caring for the environment and fostering knowledge and understanding about the entire lifecycle of Mineré plastic bottles from upstream to downstream. A Recycle Stamp activity will take place at various locations during the launch period from today until 16 July 2023.

“The launch of the new Mineré eco-friendly rPET bottle will help reduce packaging waste, closing the plastic bottle loop by enabling its recycling to produce new packaging in a never-ending cycle. This delivers considerable benefits for our planet including lower carbon emissions, saving energy and resources, and reducing plastic waste, which aligns perfectly with Nestlé's goal of making all Mineré packaging 100% rPET by 2025. Consumers can play a role in sustaining the planet by choosing to drink Mineré mineral water in eco-friendly rPET bottles and ensuring their proper disposal for further recycling,” concluded Ms. Naritta.
